Alex Albon chosen Williams to mark his return to Formula 1. The driver replaces them Mercedes departure George Russell. And Albon’s comeback certainly got off to a good start as the driver took a point at the Australian GP after P10.

During FW44, the Williams car for the 2022 season, may not be the best, the strategy that worked during the race worked out pretty well for Albon. He drove the car on a single set of hard tires for 57 of the 58 laps of the race and only pitted for a single lap.

Podium finishes and podium finishes are no stranger to the driver. Before the Australian GP he had 197 points with 2 podiums with Red Bull to his name. Speaking of the result in Australia, Alex Albon called, “We don’t spray champagne or raise the trophies, it’s always nice, but it feels just as sweet.”

Why does Alex Albon think this point was crucial?

The only point Alex took puts Williams in 9th place in the constructors’ standings as the team picked up their first point of the season. This season it came in the third race, while last season the team had to wait 11 races for their first points.

Albon spoke about the importance of the point. He said, “This is a much needed result. When you’re having a tough start to the season, you want to change that momentum and be positive. It’s tough when you’re not getting good results but it motivates me, it motivates the team to get that point on the board and now we’re hungry for more.”

Discussing his impressive stint on the hard tyres, Albon said: “I thought one of the Haas was boxing in front of me, and that’s when I was like, ‘Okay, this is going to be a tricky race’ because this DRS kept me from being passed by the pack behind me .”

“But as soon as we got clear air we just drove off and we were on much older tires than the guys around us, more or less keeping up with the McLarens and pulling away from the Alps at the very end.” he concluded.

Williams got off to a shaky start this season. But this single point could spur the team and riders to more effort and success. With the next race at Imola, the team hopes to avoid an accident like Russell’s in 2021.
