If any of you are even old enough to remember 2008, that’s when you probably read the headline “Gore Verbinski Making BioShock Movie“And it won’t be a Hard Drive gag, but is a fact.
That movie died for various reasons, but today we have news that Netflix is teaming up with 2K and Take-Two to once again “produce an adaptation of the popular BioShock video game franchise.” .”
The Hollywood Reporter have a few more detailslike the fact that the deal was in the works for “almost a year”, there is no “writer or filmmaker” attached and, perhaps most importantly, for anyone wondering BioShock games they may be adapting precisely, that they plan to “develop a potential cinematic universe”.
Last attempt to make a BioShock it was Verbinski’s project in 2008, one that quickly ran into funding problems and a potential R rating. When his projected $200 million budget shrunk back to $80 million, Verbinski walked away, and was replaced by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who would eventually leave the film, leaving the film dead. submerged in water.
While it never began shooting, finally we got to see some concept art from the projectrevealed that this first pitch will at least hopefully stay very true to the original game’s aesthetic.
Original BioShock is a game that captures everyone’s imagination because it’s set in a leaky underwater city, sure, but also because it tells the story of that city to pieces, leaving the player to wait a minute piece together what exactly happened to Rapture and the people inside it. Netflix series could have done it, but a movie? A movie would simply have to follow the broader narrative rhythms of the game, and they’ve aged very poorly.
And that’s just the original game I’m talking about. If they’re really serious about “a potential cinematic universe,” that would probably also involve a cinematic adaptation of the film. BioShock Infinitethat….yes.
