DeMar DeRozan and Chicago Bulls proved to be one of the most clicked pairings in the recently concluded 2021-22 season. Unfortunately, despite leading most of the regular season in the East, they ended up in 6th place overall. Also in the postseason, they were bullied by defending champion Milwaukee Bucks in a 5-game streak, forcing an early exit for the Bulls. While the season ended in disappointment, DeMar DeRozan certainly seemed pleased with his decision to join the team and recently opened up about the depressed state he was in during free agency before joining the Chicago Bulls a year ago.
On Green’s podcast, DeRozan detailed the depth of uncertainty the process created for him when he initially didn’t sign with any teams. At the time DeRozan landed at his hometown Los Angeles Lakers, several reports were made. But the LA team went all in on Russell Westbrook, cooling off the possible addition of DeRozan.
The former Raptors franchise player found himself a forgotten hero after being traded to the San Antonio Spurs in July 2018 and deciding to part ways after two seasons. He led Spurs in goals and assists but was considered the least effective in the league. And after he decided to go freelance last summer, he began to worry about the future.
I didn’t know what the heck was going to happen — DeMar DeRozan explains free agency agitation before signing with the Bulls
DeMar DeRozan was a big part of the Toronto Raptors’ success before they traded him to Kwahi Leonard. The Raptors won the championship the very next season, but their four-time All-Star suffered a severe blow to its league reputation. With an underperforming San Antonio Spurs team, DeRozan performed very well but failed to make the playoffs. So he decided to play again to win his first ring.

Not knowing which city will be his new home or who his next teammates might be was nerve wracking. DeRozan held up well as this was the first time he mentioned being down during the free hand. He showed no signs of being unwell at the time.
DeRozan evoked a new level of eloquence in the process during his appearance on “The Draymond Green Show.” He said, “It didn’t go as planned. This created so much doubt for me and it put me in a dark place because I started to be like, ‘Okay, where do I go now? What player will I be?’”
DeRozan said Green. “So many of these questions were starting to creep in, and a lot of people didn’t realize that big names always sign on day one or two. I think I went free for a few days with a question mark like that. Would I go anywhere on a one year contract? Would I take the minimum? The narration… brought me to an (expletive) place, honestly”.
Smiling back as he felt dejected, he added: “I remember not leaving the room the whole time — it was three, four days in a row. I didn’t see the sunset. I didn’t see the sun rise i was depressed It put me in a depressed mood because I didn’t know what was going to happen.”
Rumors surrounding the 2020 champions were strong enough to add to his dilemma. Also, other players who made moves gave him more butterflies. He mentioned the double meaning when he said: “Did I want to come to LA? That failed and didn’t happen. You see guys signing in other places. Anyone hitting me like, ‘What are you gonna do?’ And there were certain moments where I had no (expletive) idea what I was going to do.”
The move paid off for the former USC star in the end. Alongside Zach LaVine and company, DeRozan is now the shining star in Chicago. DeRozan was back in the All-Star Games and helped the Bulls to the playoffs last season after a four-year absence. Although they lost in the first round, their efforts were noticed.
