“It was a huge sense of relief.” Tyler Reddick wins the Road America Cup race, surpassing Chase Elliott for his first career Cup race win

Tyler Reddick ended up winning the race by more than 3 seconds over Elliott, who was leading 36 of the 62 laps. The duo dominated the field by a wide margin as they went on and on with their dual and Elliott had the upper hand on lap 49 when they both pitted at the same time, but Reddick was able to pull himself together and retake the lead in the chase. Kyle Larson finished P3 in the race ahead Ross Chastain on P4 and teammate Daniel Suarez in P5, both of whom are the only other Road Course winners of the time, with both wins being their first careers, as was Reddick.

Discussing his win, Tyler Reddick points out that the last time Chase Elliott won the race here, he had a strong car to take the win back then as they were at a point where they were forced were fighting their way into the playoffs. He pointed out that last time out they sacrificed their track positions for stage points by staying out of the pits.
“We stayed here last year. It was kind of an unfortunate circumstance. We were at a point where we needed to race into the playoffs with points and I really felt like we had a really strong car here last year and Chase Elliott was capable of winning that race. We had good speed but kept having to lose all of our track position to stay out and get those stage points‘ said Tyler Reddick.
He went on to say that looking back at the race he was frustrated as he wasn’t able to fight for the win like this time since the playoffs were at stake for him in terms of the number of points he secured. He points out that his team wasn’t able to reverse strategies and chase victory like they did at Road America on Sunday.
“And just looking back at last year’s race it was a bit frustrating because I felt like we had a good car because at that time of year we were just in this pit where we had to chase points instead of flipping the strategy and flipping the stages like we could today and just fighting for the win.” Added Tyler Reddick.
Tyler Reddick admitted the relief of claiming a win and getting on the winning track was one of the biggest things for him on Sunday. He points out that the win is a relief not only for him, but also for his crew and crew chief, since they are personalities who, just like him, see their car on the road to victory, despite having fought for the Cup series Race wins for a long time.
“I mean, honestly, it’s funny you saying that because one of the biggest things that came to mind down in Victory Lane was that it wasn’t just for me and my whole team, my crew chief Randall Burnett, there was a huge sense of relief. There are many members of my team who have raced in the Cup Series, have been in NASCAR for a very long time and have not won a racesays Tyler Reddick.
Tyler Reddick added that the win isn’t just a big sense of relief for him as the win is big for the entire RCR team as they were close to a win for most of the season so far. He points out that they were going through tough times and were able to harden themselves for the tougher times ahead, which they did last Sunday.
“So too – it’s not just a huge relief for me, it’s a huge relief for the whole team, for RCR, because of the effort and the time and how close we’ve been for most of the year and not coming. It’s very tough, but going through tough times gets tough people through tough times and we were able to do that today and persevere and be on topadded Tyler Reddick.
