Anne KeothavongTeam Captain of Great Britain at the BJK Cup 2022talked about Emma Raducanu‘s defeat in the second rubber tie as the Brits failed to qualify directly for the finals and will have to win their crucial play-offs later in the season. While Emma won her first match, which was her pro debut on Clay, she couldn’t repeat it for the second tie.

Against the Czech Republic Marketa VondrousovaSilver medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic GamesEmma went down 1-6, 1-6 as she battled the match with blisters on her feet that severely restricted her movement, and Marketa proved too good to miss such an opportunity as she won the match , to put the Czechs in the lead the draw and finally on the way to the final.

Emma’s struggle with fitness has continued since winning this 2021 US Open. In case of illness on 2021 Transylvania open, their start to the 2022 season was marred by a battle with Covid-19 at Christmas 2021. During the Australian Open exit, she had blisters on her hand that made it impossible to hold onto her racquet. Similarly, she suffered a hip injury during her Guadalajara performance and later a back injury at the Indian Wells Open, which again held her back.

“Before the game we were aware that she had a blister, but as the game went on it got progressively worse for her. There was no indication that she couldn’t play or that she wasn’t ready to go out and do her best. It takes time for a player to adjust to life on tour and become more resilient, and she certainly needs to become more resilient.

“I don’t think it’s a secret and she’s working on it. The more she puts herself out there, the more she tests herself against the very best, she’ll find a way that works for her.” said Anne in comments reported by Eurosport as the Brits now have an extra step to reach the BJK Cup final.

With the extent of Emma’s injury still unknown, she is likely to attend the event next week as the Brit has not made any announcement of his retirement so far.
