Israeli teen drama The Hood is getting an Indian adaptation

Tel Aviv-based Ananey Studios, part of Paramount Global, has signed a deal with Indian content producer Abundantia Entertainment to develop an Indian remake of the hit Israeli live-action teen drama The Hood (‘Schuna’).

Created by Giora Chamizer (Netflix’s “Greenhouse Academy”), the original series is set in The Hood, a dingy collection of low-income apartments owned by working-class families in the middle of one of the wealthiest neighborhoods. Kids in The Hood regularly pull pranks on the rich community’s snobbish teenagers, while the mayor constantly tries to get rid of The Hood altogether. The Hood had three successful seasons (150 x 22′) on Nickelodeon in Israel and was also sold to Portugal’s free-to-air channel RTP2.

The adaptation of The Hood is being produced under Abundantia’s young adult-focused label Filters, which joins Psych, which specializes in horror and paranormal. Also produced under the Filter label are the Indian adaptation of the Israeli youth drama “The Missing” and the adaptation of the youth book “Along Came a Spyder” by Apeksha Rao.

While no platform has yet been announced, Abundantia’s series typically end up on Amazon Prime Video, including Breathe (2018), Breathe: Into The Shadows (2020), and upcoming titles like Hush Hush and The End, marking the streaming debuts of Bollywood stars Juhi Chawla and Akshay Kumar respectively. Abundantia’s most recent films, Jalsa (2022) and Sherni (2021), both premiered direct from Amazon.

Adaptations of Vish Dhamija’s novels Bhendi Bazaar, Doosra and Lipstick starring police officer Rita Ferreira are also in the works at Abundantia.

Vikram Malhotra, Founder and CEO of Abundantia Entertainment said: “It is my honor to work with a creative powerhouse like Ananey Studios and I am delighted to be developing the hugely popular and successful ‘The Hood’ in an Indian avatar local audience. The collaboration with Ananey Studios underscores our vision to partner with world-class global creators to bring powerful stories and unique storytelling voices to progressive Indian viewers. I also look forward to expanding our content list for the fast-growing youth and young adult segments.”

Orly Atlas Katz, CEO, Ananey, and Executive VP Paramount Israel, added: “We are confident that Abundantia, with their rapidly growing hit list, is the perfect production company to make ‘The Hood’ a huge hit in India as well. ‘The Hood’ joins a roster of Ananey studio titles that have reached viewers around the world, and we’re excited to bring our content to Asia with this deal.”
