Israel Adesanya looks forward to having to ‘face the opportunity’ for a new contender (video)

Israel Adesanya is looking to continue his winning streak at 185lbs.

UFC276 is a major mixed martial arts showcase during International Fight Week. The event will be spearheaded by two massive title fights, one featuring the current middleweight champion Israel Adesanyaranked against number two Jared Canonier.

“This feels like the Super Bowl, WrestleMania, so big,” Adesanya said of the upcoming title fight. “I have a feeling this is going to be one of those that are memorable. I’ll just show off and show myself. That’s what I do.”

Adesanya has been in tears since joining the UFC in 2018. A little over a year after his debut, Adesanya fought for the interim UFC Middleweight Championship, defeating Kelvin Gastelum in a close bout at UFC 236. Since then, he has defended that title five times and even challenged himself for promotion to a weight class where he lost a fight against then world light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz. Now he faces a new contender for his title.

“This is new blood. I like having new blood,” Adesanya said. “Vettori bored me. I waited a bit for Robert and I didn’t like that for my performance. I like being up to the occasion. I was used to it, he wasn’t, he’s new to it. There’s nothing he does that I’ve never seen.”

Jared Cannonier took the long road to his first UFC title fight

Cannonier, who made his UFC debut at UFC 182 in 2015, has made it his mission to get to his first title shot. Beginning at light heavyweight, he eventually dropped a weight class where he began to compile a string of wins. Though he’s lost five fights at the company, four of those wins have come against men who would hold UFC titles at either 205 or 185 pounds. With ten knockouts to his name, Cannonier’s power makes him a real threat to Adesanya’s run as champion.

“His spirit. I recognized his fighting spirit and essence,” Adesanya said when discussing Cannonier as a contender. “I like taking care of these guys. I call all the greats and I saw that in him before you did. He has proven himself as the next contender.”
