Purdue continues to roll out to start the year. Motherboard took the business in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge earlier this week, killing Florida State 93-65. Earlier this week, I ranked Purdue #1 in my weekly strength ranking for BetSided.
Now, they’re opening their Big Ten against Iowa a little earlier at Mackey Arena on Friday night. The Hawkeyes passed the first test of the season, beating Virginia on the road behind some good perimeter shooting.
Total: 159 (Above -110/Under -110)
Let’s start the chase: Iowa stands no chance of slowing down this vaunted Purdue attack. The Hawkeyes faced a team in KenPom’s top 200, and put 74 points on a bad Virginia foul.
Now, they are on their way to face Purdue, who has the best domestic violations, according to KenPom. For reference, UVA ranks 74th.
The successful team will take a deep place in the top 100 by a three-point margin, but can also score goals with the likes of Zach Edey and Trevion Williams holding onto the No. 4 spot on the domestic rebound offensive team. .
For what it’s worth, Iowa will get their points. The team is playing with the seventh fastest attack speed this season and ranks first in the top 10 for effective goalscoring rates on the pitch. Schematically, Matt Painter’s defense will cut off shots at the edge, meaning they’ll allow opponents to shoot from outside the arc. However, this will be right in the hands of Iowa. The Hawkeyes have all the shooters and Purdue allows opponents to shoot three rounds with the highest 20 rate this season.
I expected Purdue to flirt with three numbers Friday night at home, but Iowa is also lining up for a grand total, leading me forward.
IN: OVER 159
