Inside Out 2: Pixar sequel announced with Amy Poehler

One of Pixar’s most successful films is getting a sequel. Inside Out 2 is in the works from director Kelsey Mann, it was announced at D23 Expo on Friday.

Amy Poehler returns as Joy. Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote the original film with Pete Docter and Josh Cooley, is writing the screenplay and Mark Nielsen is producing the picture, which is in early production and will be released in summer 2024.

The animated film will show new emotions and follow Riley as a teenager.

The 2015 original Inside Out envisioned a world where people have five core personified emotions – joy, sadness, fear, anger, and disgust – that guide their thoughts and actions through everyday life. The film focuses on the emotions of Riley, a middle school student struggling to adjust to her family’s move from Minnesota to San Francisco when her guiding emotion, joy, is ejected from the control center and forced to contend with its polar opposite, sadness a search through their minds. The film ended with the two coming to terms as Joy realizes that Riley must live an emotionally complex life and she begins to work more with her sympathies to help guide the girl through puberty.

Docter (“Up” and “Soul”) directed the original film, which also starred Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Lewis Black (Anger), Bill Hader (Fear), Mindy Kaling (Ekel), Kaitlyn Dias (Riley) and Diane Lane (Riley’s mother) and Kyle MacLachlan (Riley’s father).

A critical success, Inside Out won Best Animated Feature at the 2016 Oscars and received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The film was also financially successful, grossing over $800 million at the worldwide box office.

Inside Out 2 will follow Pixar’s previously announced Elemental, which hits theaters on June 16, 2023. Inside Out 2: Pixar sequel announced with Amy Poehler
