Spring meeting 2023
Seven of us met in AnnArbor last Sunday (another member joined us at our destination) before driving the historic US12 Heritage Trail, which runs between Detroit and Chicago. The weather was sunny and glad we postponed the meeting to Saturday due to rain and strong winds.
A few of us met the night before for dinner at Neehees Troy, a well-known Indian street food joint in the Detroit area. After dinner we drove to Shatila Bakery in Dearborn which has some of the best Middle Eastern sweets in this part of the country. We drove 45 minutes one way after dinner just to grab some sweets and ice cream. The plan was to meet at 9 a.m. the next morning in one of the University of Michigan parking lots in AnnArbor. Some of us met in Bloomfield and drove together through one of the nicest neighborhoods in the area, reaching the meeting point at 9:45. After chatting and clicking pictures for a while we had brunch before starting the 2.5 hour drive. Since it was a game day at the Big House, we skipped lunch at one of the downtown restaurants.
Unlike a typical freeway, US12 is a single lane, scenic, winding road that winds through historic landmarks and small towns. There were many overtaking zones to overtake slow-moving vehicles and traffic was mostly light. Our first stop was at Michigan International Speedway, which hosts Nascar racing. We clicked pictures in the parking lot for a while. The safety director of the facility offered us to drive along the track and click pictures in the podium area. He made our day and each of us loved it. After thanking him we continued our drive and stopped at one of the many antique shops along the road. After spending some time there, we made our way to our final destination in Sturgis. We split up around 5 and everyone from the Detroit area took the same route back home.
Considering the flat roads in the Midwest, it was a good route and a great way to start our 2023 meetings.
