In an interview last month, Daria Kasatkina, who had previously been described as bisexual, publicly admitted to being gay. Kasatkina felt confident in embracing her true self at a time when her country is turning away from people who identify as such. Although homosexuality is legal, it is still a very divisive issue in Russia.

Since people face bigotry every day, it usually offers very little protection against it. None of this mattered to Kasatkina, who was happy to draw attention to the issue, revealing her relationship with a woman in a recent interview. She is delighted with the overwhelmingly positive response she has received to her coming out at home and abroad:

“I don’t know how the social media filter works, but I’ve just heard very good things. Not only from the West, but also from my country. I’m very glad about that. As I have seen, it has not only been good for me, but also helped other people. This is great and I feel great. I’m happy about it and myself and that’s the most important thing.”

She said goodbye: “Yes, I feel freer and happier. I think I made the right move. With the situation in the world, all these things that are difficult, if not now, when? Let’s put everything in the same pool.”
