Igor Fruman gets one year in prison for Russian sponsorship program

Giuliani’s former associate Igor Fruman arrives in federal court for a settlement hearing on October 23, 2019 in New York City.

Igor Frumana problem before Rudy Giuliani allies become key figures of the former President Donald Trump first conviction, was sentenced to a year and a day in prison for helping to funnel a Russian oligarch’s money into the US elections.

With Lev Parnas—A jury sentenced about similar allegations last October — Fruman helped raise $1 million by Andrey Muraviev into the US election to facilitate their cannabis business. Prosecutors say about $150,000 of that went to the 2018 candidates.

Parnas unsuccessfully fought the charges at trial. Fruman pleaded guilty in September to solicit donations from a foreign national, telling a judge he has “little experience” with US election law.

“I deeply regret my actions and apologize to the courts and the United States government for this conduct,” Fruman told the U.S. District Judge. J. Paul Oetken last year, read from his prepared statement.

Before the scope of their prosecution was narrowed, Parnas and Fruman were best known for alleging that they helped Trump try to discredit the former US Ambassador to Ukraine. Marie Yovanovitch.

A prominent anti-corruption advocate, Yovanovitch is said to have become a roadblock to Trump’s quest to smear his then-rival. Joe Biden by pressuring the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to open an inquiry about Biden Hunter. Trump also tried to revive a debunked conspiracy theory that Ukraine, not Russia, hacked the Democratic National Committee’s server. Those efforts led to Trump’s first impeachment and acquittal by the Senate.

After their arrest in 2019, Parnas and Fruman took different paths. Parnas cooperate with Democrats in the House Intelligence Committee investigation. Fruman is not. Parnas embarked on a media interview before experimenting with major TV, print and online interviews. Fruman kept silent.

Parnas, along with the convicted conspirator Andrey Kukushkin, fought his charges before a grand jury. Fruman pleaded before the judge.

The geopolitical factors behind the impeachment scandal, highlighted in Parnas and Fruman’s first indictment, were eventually dropped from the indictment instead. Prosecutors did not address the allegations surrounding Ukraine during the Parnas trial.

Prosecutors asked for a prison term of between 37 and 46 months, calling him the “central player” in the scheme. They also claim that he lacks “sincerity” in positioning himself as a devoted husband, whose detention would be a burden on his family.

“For example, Fruman professed “an eternal devotion to his family and religion,” as demonstrated by, among other things, acting as the “primary caregiver” for his wife. ,” Assistant United States Attorney Rebekah Donaleski wrote in a Remember board. “Actually, Fruman is separating from his wife. […] And it looks like Fruman misled the Probation Office as to why: Fruman told the probation officer that they ‘separated in 2017 due to his arrest and legal status. ” […] But in 2017, Fruman was neither arrested nor has any legal status, because the crimes in question here did not happen until 2018.

CNN report that Judge Oetken found punishment necessary for what he called “a serious offence.”

“Our democracy is fragile and it depends on people believing in it,” Oetken said.

Prosecutors from the Southern District of New York did not immediately respond to Law & Crime’s email requesting comment.
