‘If you don’t have your st together. Actually true.’

Amanda Seales dispels the preconceived notion that she is an impossible force to work with.

The outspoken and quick-witted actress has been in the entertainment industry since she was eight years old when she starred in Nickelodeon’s My Brother and Me. But it wasn’t until she starred alongside Issa Rae and other cast members in HBO’s Insecure that she became a household name to millions of viewers.

But at some point, the Columbia University graduate went from being valued for her talents to being seen as a polarizing figure. These talents include the gift of gossip, hosting (radio and awards shows as well as her ‘Small Doses’ podcast) and singing for a short time – she replaced Natalie Stewart in the group Floetry.

“You know it’s difficult to work with, it came from me just voicing that, it came out of me voicing the negatives that were happening in certain workspaces that I was in,” Seales said in an interview with Comedy Hype.

The other half of the equation, according to Seales, is, “People want to turn me into that person who just doesn’t get along with anyone, and it’s always been fascinating to me because I’ve been in this game longer than anyone, even worked in it.”

One of those areas of work was the now canceled talk show The Real. For six months, Seales brought her uncompromising social commentary to the table alongside co-hosts Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon and Jeannie Mai. Seales has previously said she feels muzzled and unable to perform as “a fully fledged black woman” on a show championed for its various hosts.

Seales also reiterated her frustration when the show aired her farewell episode and neglected to include her.

Still, Seales said her “intent always comes from a good place” when she speaks up. “I absolutely admit, yes, it’s difficult to work with me if you don’t have your stuff together. Indeed true. I’m also difficult to work with when you try to insult me. I won’t make it that easy for you. If you don’t show up like we agreed we both will show up, it’s going to be difficult for you,” she continued, while acknowledging her posts about being labeled “difficult.”

Online, her comments drew an implacable reaction.

“A person who is tired of being their own obstacle but still holds on to their guns. Sometimes we need to stop and redirect our energy in life,” one person wrote.

“I trust Amanda means well, but she seems to have a chip on her shoulder that she carries in her energy field. People can feel and see it.”

“Intention and effect are two different things…while their intentions may be from a good place, their effect seldom hits a good place,” wrote another.

Despite the challenges she’s faced in her career and seemingly endless criticism, Seales continues to be booked. “I keep working because there are enough people who understand that I mean well.” ‘If you don’t have your st together. Actually true.’
