Iconic fish and chip shop Montis Ashore closes for good after 38 years

A legendary fish and chip restaurant in Gosford is finally closing after 38 years of operation.

Montis Ashore Fish & Chips in Point Frederick served its last customer on Sunday and many locals and loyal customers flocked to say goodbye.

The store’s closure comes after a planning application was approved to build an apartment block on the Masons Parade site, according to local media.

Many expressed their sadness on social media after the announcement.

“Last feast at my favorite Fish N Chip shop #montis Ashore Gosford closing after 38 years,” wrote one user.

“I used to live 100m up the road and loved going downstairs with my kids to get some chips. Especially on cold winter nights,” said another.

And a third: “How sad! If I had known that yesterday I would have ordered one last time. The best calamari and always so busy such a good shop and a very popular takeaway there with all the families picnicking or mooring their boats.”

However, some social media users expressed their anger and disappointment at the reason for the closure.

“Very sad development over popular local attraction. We used to go there regularly,” someone said.

“Gosford waterfront needs restaurants, not more damn apartments.”

“Very sad. Another Central Coast institution has disappeared thanks to developers and greed,” said a third.
