He told the jury the bankruptcy occurred during a “Stressful time” for him and his then-wife Sharlely “Lilly” Becker who lived there “separate quarters” at her rented Wimbledon home. “My son called me and said my wife was tearing down the house – the furniture, the windows. The police came while I was at work.” he recalled, referring to an incident that occurred while commenting on the men’s quarterfinals with Roger Federer.

Boris Becker sat on the witness stand on Monday, accompanied by his partner Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, to testify. He said he was suspended negative publicity “worldwide,” but especially inside Germany and Great Britainwhich affected his ability to work. “It’s very difficult when you’re broke and you’re in the headlines every week for it. It is very difficult to make a lot of money with my name.” the former Wimbledon champion completed.

The 24 charges he has been accused of include:

  • Nine counts of failure to present trophies and other awards
  • Seven cases of concealment of assets with a total value of more than 1.5 million euros
  • Five counts of failing to disclose the estate, including real estate in Germany and London, shares and a bank account
  • Two from the removal of property valued at nearly €500,000
  • One of them to cover up debts of 825,000 euros
