World #1 Iga Swiatek makes a winning turf debut for this season as she defeated world No. 252 Jan Fett who entered the main draw by winning the qualifiers of the current game Wimbledon Championships 2022. Swiatek won the match 6-0, 6-3 in 1 hour and 14 minutes, advancing to the second round of the Grand Slam.
Swiatek had problems with her shoulder and decided to sit out all time between games French Open 2022 and Wimbledon to be fully fit and give her body time to rest. Although no match practice came into play on the surface, it by no means looked like the Pole would be playing on the surface for the first time as she dropped a bagel in the first set after 33 minutes. While Jana took the lead 3:1 and could have scored 4:1 in the second set. But the Pole fought back, didn’t miss a game and ended it 6:3.

“I’ve only played on grass for 12 weeks in my life”: Iga Swiatek
With the victory, Iga now breaks off Venus Williams‘Record of 35 straight wins as she records her 36th straight win of the season, with the streak starting as early as February 2022. Iga now holds the record for most consecutive wins in the 21st century. However, she is lagging behind Martina Navratilova‘s all-time record of 74 consecutive wins, set between 1984 and 1986. Swiatek now has the 11 longest winning streak in sport.
“It’s my first game on grass this season and I knew it was going to be difficult. In the second set, I lost focus a bit at the beginning and she put that to good use. I’m pretty happy I came back and finished the match in straight sets. I’m just figuring out how to play here and trying to implement what I’ve been practicing, so it’s very exciting and a new experience for me. It’s very difficult because I still feel like I’ve only played, I don’t know, 12 weeks on grass in my life.
“The atmosphere, all the traditions that are there here really drive me and I’m really motivated to play here and I want to use my coach’s experience. I’m just looking forward to the next games. I do (enjoying the streak and ranking). It is very comfortable. I mean I’ve really been working on it and how tough the last few weeks have been and my team has been really supportive too. I think it’s great, but I’m sad about it ash (Barty) is not here because I would like to play her on the pitch.
“But I feel like even though I’ve realized with her retirement over the next couple of tournaments it’s a nice place to be but I’m still trying to figure out how to stay in that position and be consistent here so we’ll see , ” said Iga in her interview in court. With the victory over Jana, Iga now meets Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove, who advances to the second round after defeating British wildcard Sonay Kartal.
