“I don’t think LeBron is quite sure about Kyrie” NBA Insider believes Lakers may have better alternatives than Kyrie Irving

Lebron James had a long summer in 2022. Thanks to his Lakers teammates, he didn’t make it into the 2022 postseason despite playing his heart and soul on the court. Los Angeles Lakers ranked 11th in the west, and big changes seemed a sure bet at one of the most decorated franchises. So when the window of free agency and commerce opened, many eyes were on the Lakers to see who they pick to turn their fortunes around. One name that keeps popping up in rumors was Kyrie Irving.
Since Kyrie Irving was brought up from the Nets, only one team has shown any real interest in picking him up and that has been the Los Angeles Lakers. Her megastar LeBron James and Irving won a title together in Cleveland and hope to reunite on the west coast to repeat history.
There’s no question that a “hungry” franchise like the Lakers is trying to get back on the cover with the “always win now” list. Given the situation, swapping out the underperforming Russell Westbrook for Kyrie Irving certainly increases their chances. However, analyst Kevin O’Connor thinks the LA team should go in a different direction when looking for an upgrade.
Are LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers better without Kyrie Irving?
The 17-time NBA champions are aiming to get one step ahead of their rivals the Celtics in the overall standings of the championship. While it would be just a stat win for them, currently their accomplishments are completely at odds with their aspirations. But they had plenty of veteran stars on shorter deals, allowing them to find a quick fix next season.

They only had 2 of their main players tied for any length of time – LeBron James and Anthony Davis. After trusting these two megastars, the Lakers wanted to add some firepower and steel to their roaster so they could push for a championship.
While they brought in Russell Westbrook for another mega deal after AD, they looked like a great champion team on paper. But the experiment failed miserably and now they are stuck with a non-tradable juicy contract from Russ. Although star power is essential to fighting for an NBA title, team chemistry matters more in the long run.
So if the Lakers are considering bringing Kyrie over to Westbrook, they might even have to go through his recent past to make a hasty decision. Though Kyrie Irving and LeBron James both have successful track records, he may not be the answer to the Lakers’ problems. Looking ahead to his career, there’s no telling when he might decide he wants to get out again.
During a recent episode of “The Mismatch,” Kevin O’Connor opened up about the idea of the Lakers making a trade for Kyrie Irving. He thinks they should work out a deal with the Indiana Pacers to bolster their depth.
Kevin O’Connor said: “If I’m LeBron, I’m not entirely sure I want Kyrie. I’d rather have Buddy Hield and Myles Turner and whatever extra flexibility you can get from these guys in a deal.”
Chris Vernon, who was on the show with O’Connor, went further and said: “When was the last time Kyrie Irving made a team better when he was on the court they were better than him when he was off the court.”
Kevin O’Connor makes a great point. Going deep in a trade for Irving might be a better option than making a home run swing. When LA won the title in 2020, they did so by surrounding their star duo with defense and shooting. Former Rookie of the Year Kyrie’s skills and abilities are undeniable, but his actions and attitude hamper his legacy and take him away from being a HOF guard.
The Lakers are currently working on trades for Myles Turner and Buddy Heild while filling their roaster with a young and talented support cast of Thomas Bryant, Scottie Pippen Jr. and Juan Toscano-Anderson, and Stanley Johnson.
LeBron James has shown he can still compete at a high level, and if AD can stay healthy, LA will once again have one of the league’s top duos, having delivered a championship in 2020. Pair them with reliable supporting cast like Turner and Hield. and they could have a chance to make a splash in the league again.
