Freshly crowned number 2 in the world Iga Swiatek Continues to impress on the Tour as the 20-year-old wins her third career WTA 1000 title and second in the trot. Against Maria Sakkariwho also achieves her career-high rank of world No. 3, Swiatek won the match 6-4, 6-1 to win the 2022 Indian Wells open.
The win makes Iga the first WTA player to have 20 wins in the season, and the Polish youngster also has two massive titles to her name as she now has an 11-game unbeaten streak that began at the Qatar Open 2022 in Doha. With only three losses so far this season, Iga deservedly moves up to 2nd place in the rankings.
“Well, I don’t know yet. The day was so crazy that it’s pretty hard to imagine that I’ll be second in the world rankings. I don’t have a lot of experience in wind chimes but for sure today I couldn’t play 100% of the tactics I had, I had to adapt more and sometimes just push the ball back and play safe because I felt like the first one, the one takes a risk, will miss.
“You have to balance that with being aggressive and pushing your opponent, so it was quite tough and it was the first match I’ve played in conditions like that. So it was pretty crazy and I’m so happy I did it. Balancing my tennis and being able to rest because the schedule is tight, so I worked pretty hard last season.
“Some losses were quite disappointing so I feel like the hard work is really paying off and I can move on with that. But sure, I got the consistency I wanted to have last year on a certain level, but this year I can play even better and even play finals regularly. Iga said to Tennis Channel.
