7NEWS understands the person was hit by a truck on Monday.

The driver of the truck said he initially believed he had hit an animal, but reported the incident to police days later after the incident kept repeating in his mind.

When police investigated the incident on Wednesday, they discovered the human remains.

The freeway was closed northbound for several hours as a crime scene set up by police caused traffic to back up and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

NSW Police say they will now forensically examine the remains. The person has not yet been identified.

So far, no one has been charged in the incident.

“The investigation is ongoing and a report will be prepared for the coroner,” police said.
