How to watch the WBBL Finals on Seven: Sydney Sixers all-rounder Ash Gardner has been named WBBL Player of the Tournament

Following her announcement as the WBBL|08 Player of the Tournament, Sydney Sixers star Ash Gardner has pledged her future to the club and has re-signed for another three seasons.

The superstar all-rounder enjoyed a brilliant season, hitting 339 runs, the fifth most of any hitter, and hitting a league-high 14 sixes with an incredible batting average of 153.39.

The 25-year-old also took 23 wickets during the WBBL|08 season and became the joint Golden Arm winner alongside Adelaide’s Megan Schutt.

Exclusive to Sunrise, Gardner said she was proud of her performance but is now turning her attention to the WBBL|08 Finals, where the minor-Premiers Sixers will face either the Adelaide Strikers or the Brisbane Heat.

“It’s a fantastic personal achievement, but I think my focus will shift to Saturday (for the WBBL|08 Finals) pretty quickly,” said Gardner.

Gardner said she expects a tough fight in the Finals regardless of who the Sixers play.

“Both the Heat and Strikers are world class teams, I don’t really know who I would rather play against,” she said.

“All I know is that I want to emerge victorious.”

Gardner was a role model for women’s cricket and said the sport’s future was on the horizon.

“I always wanted to play cricket as a kid, and growing up women’s cricket wasn’t covered as well as it should have been,” Gardner said.

“I had this dream that if I wanted to play for Australia I had to play cricket with the lads.

“Now girls can turn on the TV and see their heroes pretty much anytime they want and it’s a fantastic thing to see.”

Sydney Sixers boss Jonathan Robinson-Lees said the signing of Gardner is a major coup for the franchise.

“Ashleigh is one of the fittest players in the world,” said Robinson-Lees.

“She is a founding member of the Sydney Sixers and we are delighted that she has recommitted to the club for another three years.

“Ashleigh is a proven performer on the field and a fantastic person off it. We’ve seen her transition seamlessly into the role of vice-captain this season and we know she will continue to be a key leader on our team.”
