How to use rune attacks in God of War Ragnarok

Rune attacks are special weapon abilities that Kratos can equip in God of War Ragnarök. Each primary weapon can hold two rune attacks: a light rune ability and a heavy rune ability. Rune attacks have different properties and can be upgraded three times in total. Each upgrade costs more than the previous one, but the cooldown for this attack remains the same. How to unlock and use rune attacks in God of War Ragnarok

Rune attacks are special moves; as such, they cannot be acquired by leveling up your weapon-specific skill trees. Instead, each rune attack must be discovered. Some are earned by following the main campaign, hidden boss fights, and certain side quests. The first rune attack you will learn is a reward after defeating the Huntress boss in the opening act of the story.

Each rune attack is represented by a gem placed in the appropriate weapon. After earning a rune attack, you can learn more details about it in the status menu. To access the status menu, press the touchpad and go to the Weapons tab.

Select one of your primary weapons to access the light and heavy rune attack slots in the Weapons tab. Accessing this screen gives you a small video preview of what the attack looks like in motion and a brief description of what the rune attack does. You can also see the three main stats and the cooldown of the attack. Each successive upgrade increases all three stats, but the cooldown remains the same.
