Where can I find the climbing ax in the forest?

The Climbing Ax is a clever kit that allows players to scale certain walls during gameplay. These walls are generally completely transparent and have pieces of rope hanging from them to show you the path the developers expect you to take up the wall. Due to the open-world nature of the game, it can be difficult to find a specific item without using cheats or commands, so here’s what you need to do.

The climbing ax is in cave 9. The entrance is at the point marked on the map above, north of one of the sinkholes. Search the area until you find a cave entrance near a discarded tent. This is the entrance to Cave 9. The path here is very linear, so don’t worry about getting lost along the way.

Go inside and navigate down a series of ledges. Head through the water below – you only have to submerge for a few seconds, so don’t worry about getting the rebreather first – and you’ll find another ledge leading down. Below are some enemies. So be ready to attack as soon as you get down there. When they’re dead, explore the cave and go left where you’ll find a path leading further inside. Slip through the gap between the rocks and keep going.

You will suddenly find out outdoors at the side of the sinkhole. Turn left and go down the path until you reach another gap between two rocks. Keep going forward through the gaps and down the ledges until you reach some enemies. Kill them and keep pressing. You will find a large cave leading down. Hug the left side of the cave wall and keep going around. There will be a few enemies along the way, so be prepared.

Finally, at the end of the cave, you will find the prize. A light shines on the wall to show you the climbing axe. This will make getting out of Cave 9 much easier than it was, as it will allow you to scale the walls around you. The Climbing Ax can also be used as a weapon in a pinch, but it cannot be upgraded, quickly being outclassed by other melee weapons of its kind.
