If you’ve been working with Sorcerer Rogier on his quest line, you’ll eventually find out about a dungeon that has an important item in it – the Black Knife Mark. This item is evidence of a ritual that stole a Fragment of Death and is important lore. However, to track down this item you will have to navigate the Black Knife Catacombs, a dungeon with a very interesting path to completion. How to find and complete the Black Knife Catacombs in Elden Ring.
Preparation and location of the dungeon
This dungeon is full of traps and respawning enemies, so you might want to spend whatever runes you have on hand to avoid casualties. Additionally, we recommend upgrading the Ashes ally that you plan to use the most – Kaiden Sellsword is a good choice, but you can’t go wrong with the wolves. Finally, make sure your weapon is upgraded as high as possible.
To find the dungeon, head to the Great Earthtree in the Lake of Liurnia zone – the dungeon is on the cliff to the east of the tree, as shown in the image below. Visit the Site of Grace and get ready to delve deep into this dungeon.
Before you reach the Summoning Pool, you’ll likely meet your first skeleton enemy in Elden Ring. Skeletons in Souls games tend to “respawn” unless actually defeated – after you crumble the skeleton, its corpse will glow bright blue and reshape after a few seconds. Hit the corpse again to make sure it stays dead.
Begin your immersion
Head south and dash past the skeletons that are forming. Your target is a Gravekeeper – a white-robed humanoid wielding a blue torch, as pictured above. These beings ensure that the skeletons respawn indefinitely even if you hit their corpses. However, once you kill the Tomb Warden, all of his minions will also die. You’ll find your first Grave Warden in the room with the falling blades. After you’ve dealt with him, head back down the hallway you came from and open the Stonesword Key door. This room houses two skeleton enemies as well as the Ax of Rosus, an ax of intelligence that allows you to summon your own skeleton army.
Head back into the falling blades room and wait for the middle blade to come down. Once it’s in the ground, stand on it and drive it up to the alcove above. Stay alert while riding the blade as the skeleton archers will be shooting at you all the time. Kill this tomb guard before hopping back down and exploring the path at the end of the blade room.
you go deeper
As you enter the next room, look out for the skeleton hiding in a corner on the right. After that, go down the ladder, but only after preparing for two tough fights – two giant crabs live in these sewers and they hit very hard. First go to the right part of the room to spawn the first crab and deal with it as you can. Hugging her back can help avoid attacks. Once you’ve grabbed the item, head back into the main room to spawn the second crab. Defeat it and go back to the Falling Blades room.
Head down the hallway after riding one of the blades. Jump past the two archer skeletons and around the corner, being extra careful to avoid the sword skeleton on your right. Head straight for the Tomb Warden and destroy it with a jump attack – this will also eliminate the skeletons behind you. As you enter this next chamber, watch out for the archer skeleton on the right and the sword skeleton on the left. These don’t have a tomb keeper assigned, so treat them as normal. Don’t jump into the hole on your right just yet, as we have to deal with a hidden boss first.
Boss: The Black Knife Assassin
Head west into the dead end and hit them with your gun. For once, there is actually a hidden door that leads to a boss room. We recommend summoning D, Hunter of the Dead for this fight – he’s an excellent distraction that deals great damage. The Assassin is very mobile, so finding the right time to attack can be daunting. The biggest threat to watch out for is his grab attack. This attack has a short meter, so pay attention when he stretches out his left arm and stares at you. Dodge to the side and attack – and try to let D take the aggro immediately after so you can use more jump attacks. Your reward for defeating this enemy is the Assassin’s black knife mark and sky-blue dagger.
Finished: The Cemetery Shadow
Go back into the room with the hole and drop down. You are now back in the sewers, but on the other side where the lever is. Be careful with the skeleton in the corner that will animate when you pull the lever. Once you’ve looted the location, you’re done with the dungeon and ready to fight the (actual) boss – the Cemetery Shade.
This boss is just as fast as the Black Knife Assassin but much more fragile. The shadow will appear next to three skeletons that can be easily defeated. The main mechanic to avoid, aside from the fast spinning blade attack, is the green goo spit attack. This immobilizes you for a few seconds, allowing the shadow to finish you off with a single combo. We recommend bringing your strongest Ash Summon to distract the shadow while you tend to the skeletons, or vice versa. Your reward for defeating the Cemetery Shade is the Twinsage Sorcerer Ashes and a Deathroot.
