While crossplay functionality has become a desired and expected feature in online video games, it’s not always something you want to have active. Simply put, sometimes the style of play you play allows people on certain platforms to have an unfair advantage. The most well-known example of this is first-person shooters, as PC gamers get better speed and accuracy by playing with a keyboard and mouse. Sea of Thieves automatically features cross-platform play between PC and Xbox players, which can lead to frustrations for controller players who are being bombarded by others with keyboard and mouse. Here’s how to avoid this situation.

There are two ways to keep yourself from playing against keyboard and mouse players in Sea of Thieves. The first is in the game settings. Before entering the game, open the settings and find the matchmaking settings. The only option in this section is Prefer Xbox players with controllers. Enabling this will make it less likely to join a game with a keyboard and mouse player, but it’s still possible.
The other way to completely disable crossplay is to prevent your account from playing with people who don’t use Xbox. Open your console settings, go to the Account section and select Privacy & online safety. Go to Xbox Privacy. You have three pre-designed settings for this area of your console for kids, teens, or adults. However, we prefer the custom route, so select View details and customize. Open communication & multiplayer. Your second option in this section allows you to participate in cross-network play, also known as crossplay.
If you set this to Block, your Xbox will not allow you to play games with someone who isn’t on an Xbox. Keep that in mind in the future if you ever want to play another game with crossplay. That goes for everything, not just Sea of Thieves.
