How to defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring

Elden Ring has its fair share of challenging encounters, but perhaps the most menacing of all is the clash with Malenia, Blade of Miquella. This optional boss is well known to those who have kept up with the game’s development, as one of the trailers featured her battling the powerful Radahn. Malenia is an Empyrean but was cursed with Scarlet, a disease that has manifested all over her body. She lives deep in Miquella’s Haligtree, where players can walk with her toe-to-toe in a large arena filled with flowers. Malenia is arguably the most difficult encounter in the game, with two stages, both of which are equally punishing if not executed well.

stage 1

In the first phase, players fight Malenia in her normal form. She wields a long sword that can absolutely destroy health bars. What makes this fight so unforgivable is that every successful hit she throws at the player provides Malenia with a heal, including blocked attacks. Because of this, it’s important for players to pay close attention and dodge as much as possible. She has a lot of punches and even a lunge, and often rolls backwards after her combos. Rolling to one side is helpful with many of these attacks, and it’s also recommended to keep your distance while she’s aggressive.

Malenia’s most destructive ability is called Waterfowl Dance, and she can use it any time after she reaches 75% health. You can tell that if she jumps in the air and draws her sword back, she’ll unleash it. She will then lunge forward three times, swiping wildly with each lunge. If she runs out to start this ability, players should immediately sprint as far away as possible to have enough room to avoid her. Run further away the first two times she triggers and swipes, then roll towards her for the third lunge. This one is almost impossible to get to as it essentially closes the gap and she will then turn and follow it with another set of punches. If you roll towards her, the boss will walk past you, and her follow-up cuts won’t hit the mark.

Aside from handling their attacks, there are a few tips that players can follow based on their build.

  • Pure casters can kite the boss for most of the fight. Stars of Ruin is particularly effective against them. It is recommended to cast it and then run away, which will weaken them over time. Always try to make sure there is enough space between the two of you so that you can effectively dodge the dance. This method is easier without a subpoena. Save it for phase two so it stays alive most of the time.
  • Melee builds can take advantage of their low stance to stagger them. This includes being ultra aggressive. With a summon and enough balance, players can interrupt most of her attacks and even stun her before she can successfully counterattack.
  • Malenia is prone to bleeding and frostbite, so using weapons or Ashes of War that apply these debuffs can help deal massive damage.
  • Note that hitting your summon will also heal the boss.

stage 2

When Malenia’s health drops to zero, a cutscene will play and the fight will advance to phase two. The boss will now grow large scarlet wings and be able to fly. Be ready to immediately dodge her new attack – Scarlet Aeonia. She briefly hovers in the air before bombarding the player and erupting in a giant flower around her. Roll away as soon as she tries to hit you, making sure to keep your distance as the flower will then explode and apply Scarlet for a moment.

If Malenia hits the ground during Scarlet Aeonia, she will be held in place for about seven seconds. Casters can abuse this downtime to hit them with powerful spells like the powerful Comet Azure spell. At this stage, casters should also use a summon like the Mimic to keep the boss away as much as possible. Melee players need to be a bit more careful not to get hit by the flower during this opening window.

Malenia can still use her Dance of the Waterfowl ability during this phase, so be alert and ready to dodge when you see the animation. She can also summon phantom spirits that move in a straight line and attach themselves to the player if they dodge too much in one direction. Because of this, it is recommended that players roll in multiple directions. The Bloodhound Step Ash of War is particularly useful for dodging many of these abilities. Try to stay as close to full health as possible, as the boss can easily knock you out in a single hit with most of these attacks.

Defeating Malenia is an exercise in patience and precision. Learning to effectively dodge the Waterfowl Dance is the most important part of the fight, and the rest boils down to dealing as much damage as possible while avoiding hits. The reward for overcoming it is 480,000 runes, Malenia’s Greater Rune and the memory of the God of Decay. How to defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring
