While the Elden Ring has a fair amount of enemies willing to kill Tarcked, Godrick the Grafted poses a unique barrier to progress as the first of the demigod bosses the player will face. Defeating Godrick the Grafted is not impossible, but like many Elden Rings, he requires patience, time, and perhaps a bit of luck.
Players can choose to play Godrick the Grafted solo, but I note that players should constantly hedge their bets with proper preparation. To get there, you’ll need to meet an NPC named Nepheli Loux south of Grace’s Secret Ruins, on your way past a particularly savage monster and its two friends. Go full on dialogue with her: she’ll also mention Godrick, with a bit of background flavor.
Next, remove runes by shopping or leveling up. As most boss fights go, Godrick the Grafted will slap the adventurer a few times, and losing all of your runes can be a huge blow to morale if you get killed a few times.
Once you’re unharmed, walk up to the mist gate and note the golden runes on the right side just before it: this allows you to summon Loux. She doesn’t offer great DPS, but she can help divide Godrick’s attention and her heavy hits can help Rodrick wobble for a high chance of damage. Once Loux is summoned and successfully stands, go through the mist gate towards Rodrick.
Rodrick the Grafted possesses a malice punch and can combine players if he hits a good hit. Melee players will want to stand about five meters away and watch for attack patterns. While Godrick is attacking Loux, run over and hit him hard a few times, looking like he’s staggered. You’ll know Godrick’s staggered as he roars and falls to his knees: get a couple of big hits here, either with a back hit or a combo, whichever deals more damage to your character. Friend.
Magic players should use whatever summons they want after entering the mist portal, and keep a healthy distance while casting spells. Godrick unleashes two wind attacks with a nasty punch: watch out for them after making your AoE central, as spellcasters are most at risk of subduing them.
Note that Godrick has a weird lag on attacks: he’ll start swinging his arm, then pause it briefly, causing most players to turn around and then get crucified by the the rest of the combo. Here, practice makes perfect, but being aware of delayed attacks is often enough to ensure you can dodge. If he grabs the ax with both hands, he’s about to summon wind when an AoE focused on himself ends with a slam or explosive wind. Take a step back, stay healthy and pay attention to your stamina before diving back in.
When Rodrick has about 60% health left, he will start screaming: get behind him at this point and take as much damage to him as you can. He will stagger forward with his ax, damaging anyone in front of him, and then a cutscene will play.
This is not even my final form
Like many bosses in the Elden Ring, Godrick the Grafted has two stages. His second phase gives him extra fire damage to many attacks, with a giant cone AoE added to attacks that need to be dodged. After Rodrick finishes shouting, the cutscene will end and Rodrick will shoot a flame into the air. The player should immediately rush towards him, on the right side to go behind the fire AoE. Note that procrastinating or getting stuck in the scene will cause you heavy damage if you can’t get past the arm.
This will place the player behind Rodrick while he continues to attack, causing him to take a massive amount of damage. If you can get enough heavy hits you can wobble him at this point, which almost trivializes the second part of the fight. However, when in doubt, always play it safe. You can approach again to deal more damage later, as long as you haven’t been charred.
See the animations: they’re mostly the same with fire added, and playing at a distance will allow the player to rush in at the end of his combo to deal some damage back. Keep a cool head, take out Loux’s rampage, and you’ll be closer to becoming Lord of Elden in no time.
