How to defeat Ghorm the Devourer in Core Keeper

Ghorm the Devourer is a giant larva that serves as one of Core Keeper’s three main bosses. It’s a real test of the player’s understanding of the survival gameplay loop and their ability to build on its mechanics.

Ghorm constantly travels clockwise around the map in a wide circle, with his core within the circle’s radius. As players move further away from the core, they will eventually encounter the broad racetrack of blown dirt and orange slime he has carved out of hours of non-stop racing.

Ghorm will continue on this lane regardless of whether the player tries to interfere or not until he is killed. His constant high-speed movement, coupled with his tendency to regenerate lost health when out of the player’s reach, presents the greatest difficulty to his kill.

Preparation: The inside lane

After finding Ghorm’s trail, players should organize their battlefield. Excavating the clay and sand walls lining the interior of his tunnel is a must, as anyone who gets caught in his direct path – players and monsters alike – will take overwhelming damage while being ruthlessly run over. Additionally, favoring the inlane of his path allows players to get the angle of view of the go-fast-turn-righting bug, helping to keep up while Ghorm hurtles by.

Regardless of what method a player uses to lead the fight against Ghorm, a means to speed yourself up would make the race much more manageable. Players who have fully adopted the game’s farming system have likely grown enough Bomb Peppers and Glow Tulips to cook Spicy Tulip Salad, greatly increasing movement speed.

Execution: A two-way photo finish

Two main methods allow players to fatally bring down Ghorm. While their effectiveness and difficulty may vary, their feasibility depends entirely on the player’s resources, with cost-efficiency likely playing a role in the player’s decision-making between them.

Method one: A pit stop and some elbow grease

Those who lack finesse in fighting Ghorm can still engage in traditional combat with him. Provided they’ve carved out a long enough inner trail and are waiting to hear Ghorm’s incoming rumble before eating their spicy tulip salad, using a specific unlock – the Slime Sword – makes manual combat that much easier.

Having previously killed Glurch the Abominous Mass, players unlocked the ability to craft the Slime Sword in the Core, which requires eight Tin Ingots, eight Copper Ingots, and 15 Slime. While this sword’s damage is moderate, just surpassing that of the Tin Sword, the Slime Sword has a passive effect that greatly slows targets on hit.

The speed boost of the Spicy Tulip Salad and the passive effect of the Slime Sword combine to turn the fight against Ghorm into a fight of strafing and slashing – that is, until Ghorm reaches half health and enters his second phase.

Ghorm stops running rounds, instead focusing on the player, charging through them to deal damage and destroying any walls or structures he encounters along the way. Since the destruction caused by this phase can be chaotic, it’s best to engage in Ghorm’s boss fight as far away from camp as possible to mitigate important damage.

Method Two: Spike Trap Spike Strip

Spike Traps can be crafted by players for the price of one tin bar each, provided the player has built a tin workbench. Since Ghorm can complete a full lap of his track in almost five minutes, players have about that time to lay out a series of sixty spike traps on his track.

Since Ghorm is powerful enough to destroy any blocks or objects in its path, these spike traps will all be destroyed in the process. However, every sixty Spike Traps will deal enough collective damage to instantly kill Ghorm at full health and skip his baleful second phase.

Since losing sixty tin bars can be hard for early game Havenots to swallow, this method is best reserved for the more established players who can tank resource sinks of this magnitude.
