As an action RPG from a developer like Platinum Games, you expect deep combat. To its credit, there are plenty of interesting systems to dig into throughout the game, but there’s one system that almost revives the experience moment to moment – the addition of attack modes.
Attack mode does not unlock until the end of the story. The final story mission, Heart of the Blue Sun, has a power level 70 requirement, which will take the average player around 25 to 30 hours to achieve. After finishing the story, you will get a quest marker that asks you to talk to Desran in the tavern. After doing so, you now have access to the feature.
How to switch attack mode
After talking to Desran, you can switch attack modes from the gear screen between missions. Selecting any weapon will prompt the option to set its attack mode. The shield is the only weapon available in standard mode. Don’t forget to select your attack modes before queuing up for the quest, as you won’t be able to do so after starting.
These modes can be selected separately for each weapon slot. There are three attack modes, each with their own specific use cases.
Standard attack mode works exactly as you’ve experienced so far. Nothing special there. Power mode lowers your combo, but increases the amount of damage dealt. Spectrum weapons can also be charged longer for even more powerful attacks.
Technical mode is more in line with what character action fans expect. The combo list expands past what’s available in one of the other modes. Technical mode also offers the benefit of spectral attacks that deal extra damage when timed with a combo finisher, making this the perfect attack mode for those yearning for more depth.
