Recon by Fire is the ninth mission in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign, and it’s a long, complicated mission that seems to have more than its fair share of bugs. These errors can be divided into two main categories: progress errors and technical errors. The technical bugs seem to mostly affect the PC version, but the progression bugs can affect anyone. Here’s a breakdown of every bug and fix we’ve heard of so far.

Patrolling guards do not drop bugs
After you snipe the lighthouse, two trucks full of guards will come by and patrol around you. This is the third time in this mission where you have to lie very still and pretend you are grass. Some players report that after the patrol drives by, they don’t get back in their trucks and leave. We saw a bug where a attendant stuttered heavily the first time he tried to get out of the truck and it took them a long time to leave but they did. It might help to get to the lighthouse once the guards are far enough away. Otherwise, you can always just attack. This might be a tough fight, especially on higher difficulties, but it won’t affect the No One Was There trophy/achievement.
Game crashes during Recon by Fire
This bug appears to be PC only, but has been reported throughout the campaign, including (but not exclusively) during Recon by Fire. The possible causes and fixes are varied and depend on your specific rig, but possible solutions include enabling all settings related to the cache, lowering other settings, and/or cleaning the drive the game is installed on. And as usual, it’s also worth restarting the mission, restarting the game, reinstalling the game, and/or restarting your PC. Otherwise, there is a high probability that there will be a solution when you launch the full game.
Audio issues during Recon by Fire
Not only is this annoying, but it can also make the mission much more difficult, as it is very important to listen to what Price is saying and to follow his instructions carefully. Again, it seems to be purely a PC issue. Most players have reported that restarting the mission or the game fixed this, but all the same fixes as for the crash bug are worth trying as well.
Errors with progress and checkpoints in Recon by Fire
Recon by Fire is a large level that takes place in a wide-open environment, but it’s designed to be completed in a fairly tight, linear fashion. If you deviate too much from your goals and Price’s instructions, you increase the chances of messing up the mission’s scripting logic and causing certain events and checkpoints not to trigger when they should. It’s not your fault – QA really should fix these kinds of issues before release – but it’s happened to some players, and there are ways to avoid it. Always stick closely to Price and don’t do anything or go anywhere Price or your goals don’t tell you to.
