How new CDC COVID guidelines impact the world of sports

CDC COVID guidelines are changing with the recommended isolation period reduced from 10 days to 5 days. How will that impact the world of sports?

The world of sports has been unsettled over the past few weeks with a surge in COVID cases causing competitions to be postponed and cancelled.

The NFL had to push back the games. The NBA, NHL, and college basketball teams have had to close. College football football matches have been canceled and rescheduled.

However, on Monday, the CDC dropped some new isolation guidelines after testing positive for COVID. What does it all mean?

How will new CDC COVID guidance impact the sports world?

The change to CDC recommendations could have a major impact on sports leagues around the country.

The NFL and NBA have changed their policies to try to get players back faster after a positive test. Most of those policies are focused on unvaccinated players and staff who can test off the COVID list.

With a 5-day quarantine period, even unvaccinated players could theoretically be released much faster.

For a soccer team, that could mean having a player who tested positive on Monday return in time for Sunday’s game.

It’s important to note, however, that the isolation recommendations are specific.

Here’s what the CDC says:

  • The clock starts the day you test positive.
  • An infected person should be isolated for five days, instead of the previously recommended 10.
  • At the end of five days, if you have no symptoms, you can return to normal activities but must wear a mask everywhere – including when at home around other people – for at least another five days.
  • If you still have symptoms after isolating for five days, stay home until you feel better and then begin the five days wearing a mask.

However, it remains unclear how masks might be incorporated for players during the second half of that recommendation.

That will be up to the NFL, NBA and other leagues to decide but with the CDC acknowledging that people are most contagious two days before and three days after symptoms develop, the five-day guideline should lead to some easing policies. How new CDC COVID guidelines impact the world of sports
