The Minnesota Twins were looking for a name shortcut and landed Carlos Correa, in part because a former Astros player supported the Twins.
Five years ago, the Houston Astros just won the 2017 World Series, Carlos Correa and Marwin Gonzalez were teammates and best friends.
Since then, a lot has changed. Correa remained with the Astros, but Gonzalez spent two seasons with the Minnesota Twins before joining the Boston Red Sox and then, returning to the Houston Astros in 2021.
Correa was thrilled to see him back, but for the 2022 season, both of the Astros ex-s are headed in new directions. The Yankees signed Gonzalez while the Twins signed Correa. Part of the reason Correa chose Twins was because Gonzalez reassured him.

Gonzalez, who spent 2019 and 2020 in Minnesota, recounts a conversation he had with Correa The Athletic’s Dan Hayes and Ken Rosenthal.
“He called me at the last minute, just to ask me how things were there,” Gonzalez said. “The coaching staff is great. The front office is great. The only bad thing was the weather, but the weather lasted only a month, the first month of the season. That is so that. It’s not much. But that’s what he wanted to know.”
This isn’t the first time Gonzalez and Correa have helped each other in freelance agency. Last season, Correa was human campaign to bring back Gonzalez.
While these two were once Houston’s biggest stars, a lot has changed. Gonzalez signed a minor league contract with the Yankees, a team that happened to want to sign Correa instead. Instead of Correa, the Yankees have Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who is from the Twins.
To the disappointment of New York fans, the Yankees missed out on Correa and Story, even though it was part of the series. smart free agent strategy to motivate other groups to overspend.
