How Defense Overwhelmed Bryce Young and Kickstarted Offense – The Athletic

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Chalk one for Alabama’s first-team defense over first-team offense.

If we’re being honest, the entire offensive line should be buying their starting quarterback a steak instead of the beans he gets as part of the losing A-Day team. Heisman Trophy talent doesn’t matter if the five front players couldn’t block us enough to give Young and the Crimson a chance in the white team’s 25-7 win in the annual spring scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

The first-team defense, led by pass-rush specialists Will Anderson, Dallas Turner and Chris Braswell, prevailed with a patchwork offensive line missing two starters (Emil Ekiyor and Darrian Dalcourt) and who continued to struggle with tackle- Spot got into the NFL with Evan Neal. Young was harassed all afternoon to the point where head coach Nick Saban removed Anderson from the field so the first-team offense actually had a chance to assert itself.
