How classes work in Terraria – class setups and building guide

Before you start chopping down trees and killing slimes in Terraria, you should choose a class. In Terraria, world-eating bosses and even lowly zombies are invincible without the right gear. So, choosing a class early gives you more time to collect the class-specific gear and supplies you need. There are four main classes in Terraria. There’s melee, ranged, mage, and summoner. Each of these classes has a unique play style. This guide will help you decide which class you should pick and will also give you a list of the best gear for each class.

melee class

The melee class is the most basic in Terraria. Melee classes are characterized by the use of swords, spears, yo-yos or boomerangs. With this class, equip yourself with mobility items like grappling hooks so you can get in melee range of enemies. Melee classes don’t need to focus on mana, making them an easy starter class.

early game

This is the recommended gear before fighting your first big boss.

  • armor – Old shadow
  • weapon – Enchanted Sword
  • Accesories:
    • Shark Tooth Necklace
    • Wild Claws
    • Band of Regeneration
    • cloud in a bottle
    • Hermes boots

Melee attack speed is boosted by the Ancient Shadow Armor Set, and the Enchanted Sword is a fantastic early combo option with both ranged and melee abilities.

middle game

This is before you fight the Plantera boss. Focus on farming the jungle biomes as they will give you great loot.

  • armor – Turtle set
  • weapon – True Knight’s Edge
  • Accesories:
    • Mechanical Glove
    • Avenger emblem
    • Ankh shield
    • Frostspark Boots
    • Frozen Wings

All defense stats are boosted by the Turtle Armor Set, and True Knight’s Edge is the perfect combo weapon with a bit of ranged ability.

exit game

This will be your ideal setup. You get this gear by defeating the toughest opponents in the game.

  • armor – Solar Flare Set
  • weapon – Meowmere
  • Accesories:
    • fire gauntlet
    • Ankh shield
    • solar wings
    • Heavenly Shell
    • Master the ninja gear
blank

All incoming damage is reduced by this phenomenal armor, and Meowmere is the highest damage output and most powerful recoil melee weapon in the game.

mage class

A mage relies heavily on magicka and will benefit from any gear that increases magic damage. Keep an eye out for fallen stars, as they can be used to boost your maximum mana pool.

early game

  • armor – Meteor set
  • weapon – Space Cannon
  • Accesories:
    • magnet flower
    • Band of Regeneration
    • Band of Mana Regeneration
    • cloud in a bottle
    • Shiny red balloon

The Meteor set boosts all magic, and the Space Gun is great for the early game with high damage output and fast autofire.

in the middle of the game

  • armor – Chlorophyte set
  • weapon – Rainbow Wand
  • Accesories:
    • magnet flower
    • Frozen Wings
    • Mana Flower
    • Frostspark Boots
    • Wizard Emblem

The Chlorophte armor set greatly improves magic and adds a few bonuses on top of that, while the Rainbow Rod is a fast-acting weapon with controlled projectiles.

late game

  • armor – Fog set
  • weapon – Lunar Eruption
  • Accesories:
    • crystal ball
    • Wizard Emblem
    • Ankh shield
    • Master the ninja gear
    • Stardust Wings
blank

The biggest upgrade from the midgame setup is the Nebula armor. This armor increases your mana, magic damage, and magic critical hit.

ranger class

Rangers like to keep their distance and don’t deal as much burst damage as melee or magic builds. However, what they do have is constant damage, which is useful in any boss fight. Make sure to collect bullets everywhere, as you don’t want to run out of ammo in a heated battle.

early game

  • armor – Fossil set
  • weapon – chord bow
  • Accesories:
    • Shark Tooth Necklace
    • Flying carpet
    • Band of Regeneration
    • cloud in a bottle
    • Hermes boots
blank

The Fossil armor set boosts all ammo damage, and the Bowstring is the highest-damaging ranged weapon with cheap ammo for this early stage.

in the middle of the game

  • armor – Doublet of the Huntress
  • weapon – mega shark
  • Accesories:
    • Magic Quiver
    • Avenger emblem
    • Shield of Cthulhu
    • Frozen Wings
    • Frostspark Boots
blank

Huntress’ Jerkin gives your overall ammo even more boost, and Megashark has a super high rate of fire with a 50% chance of not consuming ammo.

late game

  • armor -Vortex armor
  • weapon – SDMG
  • Accesories:
    • Magic Quiver
    • Sniper Scope
    • Heavenly Shell
    • Master the ninja gear
    • Destroyer Emblem
blank

Vortex Armor is great because it boosts ranged weapons and attacks in stealth mode. SDMG, on the other hand, fires with a 50% chance of not consuming ammo.

summoner class

Summoner is technically a secondary class, so not many people are aware of it or engage with it. However, summoning minions is a perfectly legitimate way to defeat bosses and enemies. Minions can do a lot for you, as these builds show.

early game

  • armor – Flinx Fur Coat
  • weapon – Flinx Staff
  • accessory – Hermes boots

The Flinx Fur Coat increases minion damage, while the Flinx Staff is the fastest of the early game minions you can get. The Hermes Boots will speed up your movement and help you avoid damage.

in the middle of the game

  • armor -Obsidian set
  • weapon – Crimson Staff
  • accessory – Pygmy Necklace

The Obsidian armor set is the best set for minion damage at this point, and the Bloodstaff is a strong minion with even stronger tracking. The Pygmy Necklace is incredible because it has a +1 Servant Effect and empowers everything on your Servant.

late game

  • armor – Stardust Set
  • weapon – ballista rod
  • accessory – Heavenly Shell

The Stardust armor set has a colossal minion buff and the Ballista Staff is a high damage sentry summon. The Celestial Shell Accessory improves all stats as well as minion recoil and speed.

Terraria offers over 4,000 different items, so each build can be customized to meet your specific needs. Try not to stray too far from this list, as late-game bosses can be insanely difficult on higher settings.
