While the Cleveland Browns don’t seem like a likely landing spot for Deshaun Watson, Baker Mayfield may have changed that a bit.
While at one point it seemed unlikely that the Cleveland Browns would have been able to find Deshaun Watson, it’s clear that Baker Mayfield’s intentions may have helped make the trade a reality for the Browns.
Mayfield, who was drafted by the Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft and helped the franchise find its way to victory in recent seasons after years of terrible football, seems poised to be done in Cleveland because it looks like the Browns are likely interested in finding a new quarterback to lead the franchise.
Interestingly, Mayfield’s actions may have helped create the motivation for Browns to start trading for Watson.
According to a report by Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns were informed on Thursday that Watson was not interested in being traded to Cleveland. However, after Mayfield’s agent told the Browns he wanted out of town, things changed dramatically.

As Cabot reports, that commercial request from Mayfield may have helped push the Browns to send as many draft offers as possible to the Houston Texans in exchange for Watson.
As Cabot notes, that transaction request, along with words from Mayfield’s team that the midfielder “has no plans to play for [the Browns] in 2022, it may be enough to make this transaction possible again.
In the end, as we all know, the Browns made the blockbuster deal for Watson. Some Browns fans are less than thrilled and Cleveland’s main office was being criticized by many for the transaction, but it happened in the end. Now we wait and see where Mayfield ends up playing in the future.
