(CNN) – The family of Martin Luther King Jr on Monday asked the Senate to pass voting rights legislation and said lawmakers who truly honor the late civil rights leader’s legacy must stand. the right side of history.
“Whatever happens tomorrow, we have to keep the pressure and not say clichés. Don’t tell us what you believe in, show us with your vote. History will follow what happens tomorrow,” said Martin Luther King III, son of Martin Luther King, Jr. said in a speech in Washington, DC. “Black and brown Americans will be watching what happens tomorrow. In 50 years, students will read about what will happen tomorrow and know if our leaders have the integrity to do the right thing.”
His comments came on a federal holiday honoring the late civil rights leader and a day before the Senate Voting rights legislation is expected to apply face uncertainty amid opposition from Democrats. The King family and activist groups have urged President Joe Biden and Congress to act on voting rights legislation that has stalled in the Senate.
“If you can come up with an infrastructure bill for bridges, you can give Americans the right to vote. If you don’t, there will be no bridge in this country that can carry the weight of that failure,” he continued.
