Hideki Kamiya casually refers to “Bayo 4” when discussing Bayonetta 3’s controversial ending

As fans continue to reel from the events of Bayonetta 3, one of the title’s writers has spoken out about the controversial ending. The author also teases that a Bayo 4 is coming, but didn’t give any specific information on when the sequel will be released. Warning, there will be spoilers below. So if you don’t want to be spoiled, we recommend looking the other way.

Hideki Kamiya is a video game designer from PlatinumGames and one of the authors of Bayonetta 3. Kamiya is very active Twitter account where he responds to fans and offers his perspective on games he helped create. Via Google translations, Kamiya brings up the Bayonetta 3 ending and posts that the Bayo 3 ending was not conveyed correctly to everyone. He then elaborates that Bayo 4 will be an “unexpected development for everyone”.

A Bayonetta 4 has been officially announced, and it’s unknown if a sequel is guaranteed. The Bayonetta franchise has always been a niche franchise that was only saved from complete cessation thanks to a passionate fanbase and Nintendo for bringing the series to the company’s consoles. Kamiya has hinted that something “unexpected” is coming for fans.

When Kamiya points out that the ending of Bayonetta 3 wasn’t “properly conveyed” to people, he’s most likely referring to the controversy surrounding the ending. While Bayonetta 3 was praised for its combat and gameplay, the title received heavy criticism for its story, especially the ending. Not only does the game end with the deaths of Jeanne and Bayonetta, who are dragged to Hell, but new character Viola is revealed to be Bayonetta’s daughter from another dimension and is given the title “Bayonetta”.

Fans thought Bayonetta 3’s ending went against the message of the previous two titles, deeming it unnecessarily cruel to the main character. Players also didn’t want the main protagonist to be replaced with a brand new character, especially one as divisive as Viola. It is unknown what Kamiya means by his answers, which may indicate that the original Bayonetta story is not over and fans should look forward to the fourth installment in the franchise.
