Baker Mayfield has had one of the most tumultuous NFL offseas of all time. The former first-round pick was disregarded by his former team, the Cleveland Browns, after they traded for Deshaun Watson without warning Baker beforehand, and then they held off the quarterback and tried to keep him as some sort of insurance policy, just in case Watson is unable to play this season.
Baker was eventually traded to the Carolina Panthers, and with great difficulty. The quarterback barely received any trade offers during the offseason, leaving everyone wondering if he’s really worth the hype and if he has what it takes to be a starter in the NFL? Former NFL player Michael Robinson thinks he doesn’t belong in the NFL.

“Baker Mayfield is NOT a starting quarterback”: Michael Robinson thinks the Panthers QB is extremely overrated
“For me there’s a flaw why we think Baker Mayfield is one of the top 32 quarterbacks in the NFL, he’s not a starting QB in the NFL. He is not. I can argue that he might not be one of the top 64 quarterbacks in the NFL. Mike Rob comments. This is an utterly ridiculous attitude, but the analyst goes on to explain his reasons for it.
“You see last year, after weeks 3 and 5, only 58% completion, less than 200 yards passing per game. This is not good. People will say, ‘He was injured, he’s a torn labrum,’ but he got out there and if you go out on the football field as a teammate and as a football player, I have to assume you’re healthy.” Mike Rob’s reasoning also brings up the irony of how any injured athlete who exceeds expectations is put on a pedestal based on their circumstances, but if the same athlete performs poorly due to the injury, they are crucified and their injury reviewed.
“I think Case Keenum might have more arm talent, Sam Darnold’s arm talent is better than Baker Mayfield. Both of those guys have won games in the NFL, but if you’re talking about being the starter for the Carolina Panthers, I’ll go with Sam Darnold. I don’t think Baker should get the job in Carolina, and I didn’t think he deserved to be the first draft pick. To be honest, I don’t think he should play this year.” Rob closes.
Baker Mayfield has a lot to prove and personally he would love nothing more than to start this NFL season for the Panthers when they face the Browns in the first game. However, since Darnold has been there longer and is more familiar with the team’s offensive playbook, he’ll likely start. Mayfield might not be a top 10 QB in the league, but to say he’s not among the top 64 QBs is a bit of a stretch.
