Brittney Griner was announced that she would remain in detention for a further six months during her trial. The United States government, Joe Biden, has said it is seeking her release, but her words have not yet been acted upon. Their safety under the surveillance of the Russian Federation is highly questionable.
A little over a week ago, her partner had arranged a phone call. What would have been their first conversation in over 120 days turned out to be a no-show. Russian authorities said they made several calls to the US but received no response. Cherelle Griner (Brittney’s partner) and she celebrated their wedding anniversary separately. Cherelle claimed she had “Zero confidence in our government at the moment.”

Brittney Griner could be used as a political pawn
The WNBA superstar was arrested in February after he was caught transporting hash oil, an illegal substance, at Sheremetyevo International Airport near Moscow. Brittney Griner plays basketball in Russia during her off-season in the US for the UMMC Ekaterinburg team. The Olympic champion was named an honorary All-Star by the WNBA this season.
Many speculate that Griner is being held hostage to settle a political deal. Viktor Bout, a convicted Russian illegal arms dealer who was sentenced to around 20 years in prison, has been seen as a reason the US has not pushed for her release. It was said that the Russian government planned to use them as a trading option in exchange for the convicts. The Soviet authorities would dispute this on the grounds that it was just a matter of violating their laws.

Griner faces ten years in prison
After nearly four months of waiting, Brittney Griner will appear in court on Friday. However, experts claim that the Phoenix Mercury player will most likely be found guilty. William Pomeranz (acting director of Wilson’s Center Kennan Institute) explained why Russians believe Griner is wrong.
“It’s going to be just a very dry recital of the facts. There will be no Perry Mason moment. They had a few people watching, but I wouldn’t call it a public hearing. I’m sure some state media will be let in just to get some initial photos of the trial, but I assure you they won’t be letting in western media.” Pomeranz admitted the best option for Brittney was to plead guilty to the charges in hopes of receiving a shorter sentence.
