Henry Cavill’s close bond with his dog helped him develop relationships with the Witcher animals

During his travels as a witch, Geralt has a horse companion whom he names Roach. For fans of the book series and video games, however, there’s an important caveat to that name: every horse Geralt has ever had is named Roach, according to the Witcher Wiki. Although Roach fans have grown accustomed to suffering a grisly fate in Season 2 that gives Geralt a rarely tender moment, in the next episode Geralt recruits another horse into his service who becomes the next Roach. As previously mentioned, Henry Cavill channeled his genuine love for his pets on the set of The Witcher.
During an interview with Kevin McCarthy last year, Cavill was asked many questions about Superman, The Witcher, and The Lord of the Rings. The interviewer mentioned Cavill’s famous dog, Kal, which takes its name from Superman’s Kryptonian name. Cavill was asked if he believed his close relationship with his dog helped color Geralt’s relationship with Roach, and Cavill overwhelmingly agreed. He added: “Definitely. Kal and I have a very close bond. When you spend that much time with an animal, and it’s not just an animal that lives in the apartment, and you come into their house every day.” Cavill continued, “They develop a very, very close bond with them and begin to understand their body language and their energies and things that other people don’t see that you notice about your own dog.”
