An Indiana woman was arrested this weekend after she allegedly abandoned her non-verbal, 6-year-old autistic son on the side of a roadless road in Ohio. Heather Nicole Adkins, 32, was taken into custody Saturday on separate charges in Kentucky as authorities work to force her back to Ohio to face a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment, the police say.

According to a press release from Colerain Police, Adkins on Thursday night allegedly drove her son about 75 kilometers from their home in Shelbyville, Indiana to the Town of Colerain in Ohio “where he was abandoned in area of Sheed Road and Gaines Road.” The boy’s grandmother reported Dayton CBS affiliate WHIO-TV whose name is Thomas. He just filmed 6 year old.

Police said Thomas was left on the road alone for about an hour before a motorist stopped around 9pm and left Thomas waiting in his car until police arrived. According to WHIO, it was raining and Thomas had no coat.

Ronald Reese, who picked up Thomas, provided more details to WCYT-TV, the Lexington CBS affiliate. Reese, a parent, said he was on his way to get food for dinner when he ran into Thomas. According to the report, he described the boy as looking “stunned as he walked along a road with no sidewalk.”

“I immediately stopped and was like ‘Wait a minute, this is not normal’, Reese reported station.

After being picked up by officers, Thomas is said to have stayed at the station for several hours as police assumed a parent would eventually call to find their child. Thomas was eventually managed by Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services before being hired by a close friend of Adkins Crystalyn Davis.

Assistant Sheriff Georgetown Darin Allgood told Cincinnati WKRC radio that officers on Saturday responded to a 911 call regarding a disturbance at a local gas station. One woman, later identified as Adkins, was said to be “acting irrationally”. She was arrested and held after authorities reported that she had been fined unpaid since 2011.

Adkins sat down for a prison interview with WKYT where she gives conflicting answers about her conduct, but eventually admits to leaving Thomas alone by the roadside.

“I meant to leave him there with Patty,” she said when asked about whether she would leave her son alone.

When asked the same question not long after, she gave a different answer.

“No, I left him there with Brad, didn’t I,” she said.

“You gave me conflicting answers about the names of the people you left him with Colerain,” the journalist Jeremy’s Tomb reported said. “So did you leave him with someone or not?”

“No, I’m not leaving him with anyone,” Adkins replied.

“I was just trying to understand why you ended up choosing to do that,” says Tombs.

“To save him from me,” Adkins replied.

Adkins was scheduled to appear before a judge in Kentucky on Tuesday for an extradition hearing. According to the WKRC, prosecutors are now considering upgrading the charge against Adkins to a felony endangering child with a maximum penalty of eight years in prison.

ONE GoFundMe was established to help Davis cover the cost of childcare. She is also taking care of Adkins’ two other children.

Thomas ‘father, Kevin James Adkins, was also arrested earlier this month on charges of methamphetamine possession and driving with a suspended license, online records show. He is currently in prison in Shelbyville.
