Ashleigh Barty said on Thursday that she will remove herself from the WTA rankings after announcing her retirement, thus opening the door for Poland Iga Swiatek to become number 1 in the world. The three-time Grand Slam winner from Australia has held the top spot for more than two years but stunned the sporting world on Wednesday by announcing her retirement at just 25.
20-year-old Swiatek is a whopping 2,204 ranking points behind Barty but there will be a new No.1 on Monday when the new list comes out and the second-placed Pole is first.
Iga Swiatek reflects on Ashleigh Barty’s reaction to her top spot
Ashleigh Barty on Thursday said she was stepping down from the WTA rankings after announcing her retirement, opening the door to Poland’s Iga Swiatek to become world No. 1.
The three-time Grand Slam winner from Australia has held the top spot for more than two years but stunned the sporting world on Wednesday by announcing her retirement at just 25.
Discussing Ashleigh Barty’s praise, the Pole said that despite being world No. 1, she still can’t match Ashleigh Barty and emulate it. She also showed a desire to fight.
“When I hear those kinds of words from her, I’m quite grateful. Even when I was training against them, I felt like I wasn’t in that place to really compete against them. I think a lot has changed after Indian Wells because I thought maybe I can really do it now – I’ve developed my game a lot and I’m actually fighting to be first. said Swiatek.
Moving on, Swiatek also reiterated her respect and admiration for the former world No. 1, Australia, revealing that she had motivated her. She also said it means a lot to hear from her and thanked her.
“I always respect Ashleigh and she has given me tremendous motivation to work on my tennis. And hearing her words means a lot. I don’t even know how to describe it. I’m just thankful.” added Swiatek.
The Pole now meets Madison Brengle in the third round on Sunday.
