“He did for India what Usain Bolt did for Jamaica”

Olympic champion Justin Gatlin spoke to news sources about what he believes Neeraj Chopras Victory did for India. Speaking to Digvijay Singh ahead of the TCS World 10k in Bengaluru as a brand ambassador, the 40-year-old offered his opinions on a variety of topics including Chopra’s victory at the Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra had a historic win at his first Olympics, the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, taking gold in the men’s javelin throw with a length of 87.58m. While Gatlin remains an inspiration to many athletes to this day, he has Feeling that Neeraj is now inspiring the younger generation of athletes. Gatlin has compared Chopra’s success to that of Usain Bolt and said, “What he did for India, that Usain did the same for Jamaica. He has inspired so many young talents.”

“Many more athletes will come from India”

he continued “You can say that I come from the same background, even I can get there and make my country proud. Golden Boy has done great things for his country and I believe there will be many more athletes from India now.” Such praise from another Olympic champion will give Chopra confidence for the future.

Gatlin also had a message for aspiring Indian athletes, saying“I believe there are Indian athletes out there who can become gold medalists. They just have to be able to go out and learn their sport. Sometimes sacrifice matters. It may mean that I have to go to another country or find another coach. They have a javelin thrower who is a master. He probably sacrificed so much to be the athlete he is today.”

Gatlin also spoke about his relationship with teammate and competitor Usain Bolt. “We helped each other become better athletes. He has put on record that I pushed him, especially to a point where he felt the sport was no longer exciting. But then he pushed me to be a better athlete, even though other athletes sometimes feared him.”
