‘He deserved the fight’: Dana White confirms Colby Covington’s title fight regardless of Jorge Masvidal-Gilbert Burns result after UFC 286

In a hard fought five round battle, Leon Edwards emerged victorious in tonight’s UFC 286 main event. Securing a majority decision (48-46 x2, 47-47). The fight was extremely close and even Dana White struggled to score.
Dana White praises Colby Covington as a phenomenal fighter
“I don’t know when we’re going to do it. But that’s the fight that makes sense,” White said in a follow-up fight press conference at the O2 Arena. “Colby came here and cut weight and did everything to be here for this fight. He deserves the fight, not to mention he’s the second or third best guy in the world.”
With confirmation from UFC’s Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell. White announced that the promotion is in the process of arranging a fight between welterweight contenders Belal Muhammad and Shavkat Rakhmonov.
Colby Covington (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC), who last beat Jorge Masvidal in March 2022. He was announced as the championship backup fighter for UFC 286 and made weight. Aside from two losses to Usman, Covington is undefeated since 2015.
After his win on Saturday, Leon Edwards (21-3 MMA, 13-2 UFC) is now undefeated in his last 12 fights. The streak goes back to his first fight against Usman. His notable wins during this run include Nate Diaz, Rafael dos Anjos, Gunnar Nelson and Donald Cerrone.
