Rafael Nadal continues his unbeaten run in the Californian desert, surviving a rigorous test by the Australian showman Nick Kyrgios. Nadal defeated Kyrgios in straight sets 7-6(0), 5-7, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters, making it 11 for Nadal to reach the semifinals in Indian Wells and extending his 2022 winning streak to 19 extended.
After the match, Nadal analyzed his performance and spoke highly of Kyrgios. He said he didn’t play his best tennis today because the Australian didn’t allow him to. He further said that Kyrgios changes the dynamic of points very quickly and has a big first serve, which is why it is very difficult to play him.
“I think I played well in some moments. It’s difficult to play against him, it’s tough because he changes the dynamic of points very quickly, his serve is huge, especially the first one. So I was lucky enough to save the first set, but in the second, when I was in control, I played a bad game again at 6-5. But I think I played a good third set, returned better, had a good serve except for one game. Nick is one of those players you’ll have trouble against if you’re motivated. So happy with the win” said Nadal.
“Tennis is all about momentum”: Rafael Nadal
After losing the second set in the worst possible way, all the momentum had shifted to Kyrgios. The Aussie started the third set with a bang on serve, holding serve easily. Nadal, on the other hand, struggled with his serve and even faced a few break points. Speaking to Paul Annacone, Nadal said that tennis is all about momentum and to break Kyrgios’ momentum Nadal had to persevere.
“Tennis is all about momentum. And I know after Nick won the second set, the start of the third will be very important. I only had to save the first few games and then the game went back to normal and anything could have happened. And then I played well, of course anything can happen in the third set against a player like Nick.” Rafa said.
He then added that he had won many games in the last few months and therefore had the confidence to play another game. “But I’ve won quite a few games in the last month and a half so I just felt ready to go. I’m just happy to be in the semifinals.” he added.
