HBO Max Scraps DC Series Strange Adventures by Greg Berlanti

Greg Berlanti’s DC series Strange Adventures isn’t progressing at HBO Max, diversity has confirmed.

The planned anthology series was first announced in 2019 as a streamer in development. Kevin Smith discussed the fate of the series on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast and said he’s working on an episode with Supergirl writer Eric Carrasco.

“The other day, before this whole story broke, I got a call from Eric and he just said, ‘Strange Adventures is officially dead,’ and I was like, ‘What the hell, are you serious?!'” Smith said.

“I found ‘Strange Adventures’ to be a kind of causality for me,” he continued. “No one necessarily knows these characters; it sounded like an expensive show.”

Little has been reported on Strange Adventures since it was announced nearly three years ago. According to the description released at the time, the show would be a DC superhero anthology, intended to feature characters from across DC canon. The hour-long drama would explore closed-loop stories about the intersecting lives of ordinary humans and superhumans.

Berlanti executive produced the show under his Berlanti Productions banner, which has an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. He is also executive producer on a number of other DC shows on HBO Max, including Titans, Doom Patrol, and the upcoming Dead Boy Detectives series.

There has been much speculation about the future of DC’s TV efforts at HBO Max following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger and the direction CEO David Zaslav will take the brand once he’s at the helm. These speculations were heightened with the cancellation of the planned Batgirl movie, although it was already in post-production. A Wonder Twins film in development was also recently shelved.

Zaslav said at the Warner Bros. Discovery Q2 earnings call on Aug. 4 that the plan is to create a 10-year roadmap for the DC film and television universe, much like Marvel has done with its own extensive slate. HBO Max Scraps DC Series Strange Adventures by Greg Berlanti
