Hawk’s thoughts are spoiled after Kevin Durant’s career night – The Athletic

The Hawks won their most important game of the season on Saturday with a 122-115 win over the Nets. It gave Atlanta sole possession of eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Kevin Durant scored a career-high 55 points, the most points in State Farm Arena history, but it still wasn’t enough for Brooklyn.

The loss dropped the Nets to 10th place in the conference and a game behind the Hawks, putting New Jersey in the play-in tournament. Here are five observations and thoughts after Atlanta’s win:

Trae Young again

That’s what we expect from Trae Young. He can take over games at any time like he did in the closing minutes against the Nets. It wasn’t even a spectacular offensive effort from him, and he still posted 36 points, 10 assists and six rebounds on 42 percent shooting. There were times when shot selection felt forced, but he delivered when it counted.

Brooklyn cut the lead to three with just over two minutes to play, but Young then buried the Nets with his go-to floater on back-to-back offensive possessions, taking the Hawks to five with just under a minute to go.

His final was a devastating 3 against Patty Mills. It’s the kind of shot we’ve seen so many times in his four seasons in the league.

“If you’re doing big plays at certain moments, it’s just an energy thing,” Young said of his dancing. “It’s hard to explain unless you’ve been in those moments and you know how it feels.
