Hawaiian football gives Memphis the Christmas break of his dreams, away from Hawai’i Bowl

Hawaiian football, fittingly, is supposed to host the Hawai’i Bowl on Christmas Eve. Instead, Memphis will relax in heaven because the Warriors can’t compete.

Bowling season never stops until the game of natty is played, and that includes on Christmas Eve. Or it already includes Christmas Eve. But for now, the Hawaiian football show will likely leave college football fans without a game to watch on December 24.

The Rainbow Warriors are set to face the Memphis Tigers traveling in Honolulu for the holiday Hawai’i Bowl in an exciting Group 5 battle. But now, with COVID, injuries and transfers have drained Hawai’i’s roster to the point where the Rainbow Warriors have bowed their heads out of the game, as they announced on Thursday night.

Now, the game of bowls is left to scramble and try to figure out what’s next for Memphis and the game.

Hawaiian football cannot participate in EasyPost Hawai’i Bowl

Now that the Rainbow Warriors have abandoned the bowl game that, in essence, they will host, there are a few options on the table.

It’s almost certain that any invites won’t be completed in time so another team can head to the Pacific to play Memphis in the game on Christmas Eve. So if they were to look for a replacement, that would mean the match would be delayed.

The other option on the table would be to just stop the game altogether, which seems doable given the travel and testing costs required to get a team to the islands and ready to play the game.

Regardless, Memphis will spend Christmas Eve in Hawai’i. While the Tigers are rivals that want to compete, the truth of the matter is they probably won’t complain about a vacation in paradise.
