Kelvin Sampson turned the Houston Cougars into a college basketball powerhouse.
It hasn’t been since the days of Phi Slama Jama that the Houston Cougars have become as intimidating as this on the basketball court.
In Kelvin Sampson’s eighth year at the helm, the Cougars are not only one of The American’s best teams, but one of the better shows in the nation. They are carrying a lot of momentum before joining the Big 12 Conference shortly. After the sweet round of 16 win over Arizona and the Elite Eight’s appointment with Villanova on Saturday, has Houston ever won all-round?
Here’s a look at the rich basketball history of the Houston program entering the Elite Eight.
Houston Basketball: Have the Cougars ever won a national championship?
During the 2020-21 college basketball season, Houston has never won a national championship before. However, Cougars are making their seventh appearance in the Elite Eight. Every time they made it to the Elite Eight, they went on to the Final Four. Houston made it to the Finals for the sixth time a year ago. Twice the Cougars have played for a national championship.
From 1982 to 1984, the Cougars reached the Finals 4 each season. In 1983, the Cougars lost to the North Carolina State Wolfpack, thanks to Lorenzo Charles’ second final hit. The following year, they lost to Patrick Ewing’s Georgetown Hoyas. Though there were future NBA superstars in that run in Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon, the Cougars never won them all.
It might be a completely different vibe to Phi Slama Jama, but Cougars is a great show now.
