Harry Styles duet with Shania Twain, debuts new song at Coachella

Harry Styles began his Friday night headlining set at Coachella with a simple greeting. “Good evening. My name is Harry.”

We know the masses must have been thinking in unison. After all, tens of thousands gathered at a polo field in Indio, California to watch his set, and just as many tuned in live on YouTube.

“It’s big in here, isn’t it?” Styles cracked before explaining how things would go. “For the next 80 minutes or so, our job is to entertain you. I promise you that we will do our best. They also have a job – to have as much fun as possible. I want you to be who you always wanted to be in this field tonight.”

For Styles, it was a throwback of sorts – to his younger pre-One Direction days singing Shania Twain songs in the car. And there she was in the flesh, about an hour into his set, to be on Man! I feel like a woman!” Twain’s massive 1999 hit.

“This lady taught me to sing,” Styles of Twain said. “She also told me that men are trash.”

Said Twain, “I’m a little struck by the stars, what can I say? No, really, I’m a fan of yours of course. I realize that when I wrote this song you were just a little kid. It’s kind of a dream and very surreal to sit here and sing this song with you. I think I’m just in love and this song is all about love. So let’s just sing about love.”

The two then sat down to sing 1997’s “You’re Still the One.”

At the start of the set, Styles released a couple of new songs of his own: the just-released “As It Was” and a new tune presumably titled “Boyfriends,” in which Styles remarked, “Who in the audience ever had a boyfriend? Who in the audience has never had a boyfriend? Friends everywhere, fuck you.” Styles later debuted “Late Night Talking” with another unreleased track. Style’s third studio album Harry’s House will be released on May 20th.

Styles implored the crowd to “please be gentle” for the track’s debut. The acoustic-based, multi-harmonic song tells of what appears to be an on-again, off-again relationship in which “you still open the door.”

It all went well with Styles’ comment from upstairs on set: “It’s a full moon, you have a ticket and I have to play.”
