Returning to Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night, Harry Styles took a moment to address internet speculation that he spat on Chris Pine during the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling at the Venice Film Festival.
“This is our tenth show at Madison Square Garden. It’s wonderful, wonderful, wonderful to be back in New York. I just rushed to Venice to spit on Chris Pine,” Styles said jokingly in video footage captured by fans. “But don’t worry, we’re back!”
“Don’t Worry Darling” was at the center of the film festival’s rumor mill, with a video clip that went viral on social media and appears to show Styles spitting at Pine as he takes a seat at Monday night’s premiere. However, the act was not clearly identifiable in the records and has since been denied by Pine officials.
“This is a ridiculous story – a complete fabrication and the result of a strange online illusion that is clearly deceptive and allows for silly speculation,” Pines’ spokesman said in a statement diversity. “Just to be clear, Harry Styles didn’t spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men, and any other suggestion is a blatant attempt to create drama that just doesn’t exist.”
This was also shared by a source close to the Venice Film Festival diversity that there was no tension surrounding Styles and Pine during the premiere and that a possible incident of spitting was not reported by anyone during the event.
Styles stars as the male lead in the Olivia Wilde-directed film opposite Florence Pugh. Pugh notably did not appear at the festival’s press conference for the film, nor will he attend the Q&A in New York.
The pop star will complete his 15-night residency at Madison Square Garden on September 21 and then play multiple multi-night runs in Austin, Chicago and Los Angeles through November. “Don’t Worry Darling” hits theaters on September 23.
